Boca de Camarioca, Cuba

3rd of February 2020

As usual I had left it a bit late to book a casa but I did find an entire house, off the main street.
Derek and I took a walk to the main square and ran into Eva and Chris who I had met at the immigration office in Varadero. They showed us where to buy milk, and where the butcher was. Eva also gave us some eggs from a neighbour and some carrots. Fantastic.
It is not easy to self cater, but Derek and I enjoyed exploring the streets looking for food.  You need coupons to get things like eggs or sometimes meat, but what is available on the street is mostly bananas, pawpaw, guavas, tomatoes, cabbages, yummy peanut brittle bars, and other random stuff someone has got from somewhere, usually Panama. We saw an old man sitting at his door step selling two wilted lettuces, another old woman sitting with a bowl of boiled lollies selling them to passers-by. Around the corner from us in Boca a lady sold homemade biscuits, very nice. We even found an ice-cream shop selling ice-cream in a plastic bag. By the end of our holiday we were understanding what we could or couldn't buy.

We really enjoyed this little beach town, meeting new friends,  eating good food and drinking caipiroskas.
