grand canyon rail, USA

Our first visit to the Canyon was on the old Williams rail line, which included a cowboy show before we left and an  armed robbery by the same cowboys on the way back. Very touristy but something different.

The Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Others are  Mt Everest, Victoria falls, Aust great barrier reef, northern lights, Paricutin volcano in Mexico and harbour of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It is beautifully grand at 277 miles long, 1 mile deep and covers 1900 square miles.

Free Camp at Tusayan

We free camped at Tusayan just outside of the Grand Canyon, where they have a shuttle service to take you to the Visitors Center. From there you can catch other shuttle busses to take you to different locations. So very organised.

At this stage we can only free camp for one or two nights before we run out of battery power.

Grand Canyon South rim, Az

Jo stayed behind with Lucy while the rest of us took the shuttle into the visitors Centre. We thought our rig would probably be too big for the parking places there.

Grand Canyon East rim, Az

One last look at the Canyon on our way to Monument Valley. The easiest way to get there was to drive past  the Canyon. I thought if we were luck we would be able to get a camp site at the East rim.

We did find a site, but the ranger came over and said we were too big to stay there - don't know why, there was plenty of room. Anyway he said we could stay if it was only for one night.  Lovely spot ,walking distance to the east rim.

  1. Your visit to the Grand Canyon bought back memories for me. But the only real way to see it is by mule. My family took the two day trek down to the bottom and back up the next day. Staying at the cabins overnight at the bottom. Walking on the 6 inches closet to the edge was nail biting indeed. This was many moons ago of course 🙂 Enjoy!
