Island Janitzio on Lake Patzcuaro

Island Janitzio on Lake Patzcuaro

We caught the 50cent combi bus over to the lake, hopped on a ferry, past the fishermen and onto the island. All very easy and cheap.

Island Janitzio is a bit like Mexicos version of Frances Mont Saint Michel.

You walk up a narrow lane filled with shops and restaurants on both sides, but instead of an Abbey at the top there is a monument to Jose Maria Morelos.  He was a revolutionary leader during Mexico’s fight for independence and was executed by the Spanish government.  This statue was erected in 1933 to honor his memory.

Lago up up up

We arrived at the island, and started to walk up, up, up.

At the top

Very interesting monument to José Maria Morelos. You get a history lesson of his life in pictures on the way up.

He stands with a proud fist in the air, probably getting his finger ready for Trumps wall.

The old men dance

Danza de los Viejitos, Dance of the little old men.

All the way down

All the way down, with a stop for lunch.

Lauras highlight

The highlight of the day for Laura was the stray puppies.
