Sanctuary of Atotonilco near San Miguel de Allende

The Sistine Chapel of Mexico.

What a fabulous surprise this church was, I had not read much about it but the little town was only  a few km from San Miguel de Allende so decided to take a drive out there.

The kids are already sick of me wanting to go inside every church - and there are a lot in Mexico.

The church was built in the 18th century by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, who, was called upon by a vision of Jesus with a crown of thorns on his head and carrying a cross. The main feature is the rich Mexican Baroque mural work that covers the main nave and chapels. This was mainly the work of Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre which took him over thirty years to complete. The church is still a place of worship, pilgrimage and penance.

We had a walk around the town and found this housing area with lovely peaceful gardens.
