The Trip Today

Some days you are just not thinking too straight.  We changed our minds late last night and decided not to stop at Gogorron for the hot springs.  The resort looked like it catered more for hotel guests than rv'ers and I thought we could catch up with hot springs another time.

The result was that we didn't do much research on our trip from Matehuala to San Miguel de Allende.  I had a quick look at the route plan and noticed the RV program on the Sat nav took a long way around by 15 miles extra so I changed the navigation to car.

The result was 40 miles of very narrow road.  I had to take the extension mirror off as I was sure it was going to get busted by the vehicles coming the other way we were that close.  We also locked the brakes over a speed bump we didn't see until the last minute.

Then as I had forgotten we were headed for an ancient town and hadn't changed the sat nav back to RV, it took us towards the old town as the shortest route of course.  Down cobbled streets and into alleyways.  Finally realised our mistake and found a tee junction with enough space to put the truck into one leg and back the trailer down the other leg to turn around.  Quite a spectacle for the locals who of course advised us that we couldn't go through the old town with a truck and trailer.  Thankfully managed to get out without damage.  Thankful also to the family with two-ways and the back and side cameras I installed.

On the way out we had a local pull up beside us and ask where we were going?  He said follow me and lead us about 10 miles the rest of the way to our hotel site.  By now we had sat nav on RV and the route was the same however the escort was much appreciated.  No gratuity was requested and he just indicated the hotel and peeled off.

At the hotel we followed the attendant without walking the route and found ourselves in a lot about 55 feet wide and told to turn around and back in.  Well we are 50 feet long so turning on the spot not an option.  Two-ways and cameras and about five goes at it later we managed to get parked with just a rub mark on the rear bumper of the trailer from a tree and another on the front from the jack-knife of the truck.

Then we opened the door to the trailer.  The speed bump and roads had predicable results.  Everything from overhead cupboards strewn around the cabin.

If you zoom in on the attached map you can see the "shortcut" we took and the excursion to check out the old town.

  1. Derek, trying to do a James Bond through narrow street of historic town in Mexico is bound to have it’s challenges. Hope you’ve captured it on video!!
