San Antonio

Riverwalk RV park, with some very big RVs, they dwarf our setup.

We caught the public bus into town to see the sights.

A  night at a very polished stock show and rodeo.

It ended with a concert featuring a Texan country music singer and song writer Aaron Watson.

The Alamo

San Antonios Missions

The most well known Mission is the Alamo

“Remember the Alamo”
In the 1700s, the Alamo was built as a home to Spanish missionaries. Mission San Antonio de Valero. Over time, the mission was turned into a fort for Spanish soldiers who called the fort the "Alamo."
The Battle of the Alamo was fought betwee Texas and Mexico The Mexican General Santa Ana and his troops arrived on February 23, 1836. They laid siege to the fort for 12 days. On the morning of March 6, they launched a major attack. The Texans managed to fend off the first few attacks, but there were too many Mexican soldiers and they fought their way inside the fort. Santa Ana won the battle and killed all Texans at the Alamo except a few left to tell the tale.

One of the Texans killed was Davey Crockett,
I didn’t know that Davey Crockett ‘King of the wild frontier’ had died in the Alamo along with Jim Bowie of the Bowie knife fame and Colonel William B Travis.
Davy Crockett was from Tennessee, a three time congressman but lost the fourth election so he decided to seek his fortune elsewhere, in Texas land was cheap.

Mexico won this battle but Sam Houston on April 21st 1836 caught up with Santa Ana later and literally caught him and his troops napping in the afternoon, this battle was won by Texas. Santa Ana was caught and Texas independence was secured. Sam Houston was voted president of the new Taxan country in 1836 and again in 1841, he then served as a senator after Texas became a state in 1845.

San Jose Mission 1720

Derek and I caught the bus out to see the other missions around  San Antonio.  They really do make it easy by having tourist buses and trollies to get you around the area. The weather was freezing so the kids stayed behind and did school work.

  1. Really wonderful history there. How lucky are we today???? Great photos also. Hope the kids are finding their study easy…..you just miss the interaction with other students that is all. Laurie has been in Townsville for work and Naomi went to Tolga as Louie cannot swalllow and has not been able to for some time. /throat muscles just do not work very well…everything wears out in time. Many old people have difficulty in swallowing. Jim’s brother Rod has had an operation for a growth on his chest? they say they ‘got it all’ so at least he has a reprieve for now. My prolapse is coming along nicely, not really, doing the pelvis floor chair 3 days a week, and it is a great help. Can exercise the muscles much better than I can. My level for holding has gone up from 1 to 4, so something must be working. Instead of two hours sleep, I get to sleep 11 pm to about 4.30 now, so that is a great improvement. Today is community bus day to go to the shops. Saves me trying to drive in traffic with my googley eyes……ok…all the best….remember to tell your oldest child that she can show her teefs when she smiles…..love Granny Robyn. xxx\
